Renaissance & Early Modern LiteratureThe Renaissance and Early Modern periods were both given to intense and varied literary production. Most of us immediately think of Shakespeare, but he is in very good company. This is the era of Cervantes, of Donne and Milton. It is the age of Renaissance Humanism, were men and women throughout Europe re-engaged themselves with the great works of the Classical Age and sought to outdo them. This is also the time when we might even get the first magic fantasy literature thanks to poets like Ariosto Lodovico with his epic work, Orlando Furioso.
We have grouped the materials below generally by author or group of authors who shared similar theme or locality. As with all of our literature pages, we've tried to incorporate some sources that speak to the philosophical rooting of various works in artists in the hope that that will help flesh out context and perspective. Please send along suggested sites, and our own tutorials will be accompanying these resources very soon. Thanks for visiting. |
