African HistoryAfrican history is human history. Our earliest ancestors first developed there before embarking on a journey of diaspora around the globe. Since then, Africa's history has been one of the most glorious, turbulent and diverse of any. The ancient and medieval periods were ones of vast growth, empire, civilization and vigorous trade and commerce. By the Early Modern, the Western and Near Eastern appetites for slaves rocked and decimated sub-Saharan Africa's population and rendered them vulnerable to future exploitation. By the late 19th century and early 20th most of Africa had been claimed as a colony of a Western power, and the long road towards emancipation, decolonization and reclamation of autonomy lay ahead. Today, Africa is a growing region and one of ever more interest to historians and other researchers.
