Renaissance & Early Modern HistoryThe period often lumped under the title or Renaissance and Early Modern is one of profound changes in Europe and throughout the world. In Europe, there is a revitalization of intellectual and cultural energy while, at the same time, there is a splintering within Christianity that will forever scar and change the continent. In the Near East and Asia. the great Islamic "gunpowder empires" of the Ottomans, Mughals and Safavids hit their zenith. In the New World, many Native Americans make first contacts with Europeans, and vice-versa. Finally, in Africa, the demography and societies of the vast continent will be forever altered by an unprecedented explosion in the practice of slavery.
